Māori Algorithmic Sovereignty Principles

TMR advocates for Māori rights and interests in the digital environment, and for ethical applications using Māori data, Māori digital sovereignty should be acknowledged where Māori data is used in algorithmic systems using any data that applies to Māori populations or environments where Māori have rights and interests. The Tikanga in Technology research team produced a set of principles that extended Māori Data Sovereignty Principles to include algorithmic systems and associated issues.

Māori algorithmic Sovereignty: idea, principles, and use

Māori algorithmic sovereignty has been defined and the underlying principles have been developed. The paper highlights how these can be used to decolonise algorithms currently in use, as well as considering how they could be potenitally used to indigenise future algorithms.

Māori AI Wānanga 2022 - Decolonising Algorithms

Paul Brown, Kiri West and Daniel Wilson presented initial findings of their research into decolonising algorithms. TMR members were invited to the Māori AI Wānanga (August 2022) hosted by Te Kotahi Research Institute, University of Waikato with support from TAIAO and the Tikanga in Technology research teams to discuss AI - present and future.

Ernestynne Walsh (Nicholson Consulting) shared a presentation at the Māori AI Wānanga: Whakamanutia te reo using Ara Poutama mō te reo Māori and the place of Māori in, and throughout the entireity, of AI.

Kevin Shedlock (Te Herenga Waka) shared some of his research on decolonisation and innovation happenign around Māori processes for producing the AI IT artifact.

Māori AI Wānanga 2022 - Bilingual Conversational AI

Punamahoe Walker (FranklyAI) shared his work developing bilinguial conversational AI to reinvent how we hear from communities with the aim to enable better decision making processes for Māori.

Māori AI Wānanga 2022 - Māori Taiao data

Stephen Fitzherbert and Alan Tan (NIWA) spoke at the Wānanga about their programme Hikina te Arai - Lifting the Veil and the novel applications of AI to Māori environmental data.
